As social workers, helping people who are in tough situations can be rewarding, but it can also be a challenging profession and not for everyone. Weighing the pros and cons of being a social worker and having a firm understanding of what the job entails is important before deciding to pursue a career in social work.

What does becoming a social worker involve?

Becoming a social worker means performing a wide range of tasks,聽but the vast majority are related to聽helping people. Typical duties include checking in with people who are dealing with substance dependence, investigating homes with potential abuse and helping people apply for community resources, such as food assistance programs.聽Typical social worker roles also include:

  • Child and family welfare: A family social worker generally supports families and children by connecting them with useful resources, investigating claims of abuse and helping displaced kids find foster homes.
  • Healthcare: Becoming a social worker in this field helps disabled and elderly people adjust to new situations as they undergo treatments or otherwise find themselves with physical limitations.
  • Mental health and substance abuse: Social workers provide support and programs for people struggling with mental health issues or substance use.

  • Schools: Social workers at schools help to identify and address issues that may be affecting a student鈥檚 education, such as troubles at home and substance use.
  • Hospitals:聽Most healthcare social workers are employed by hospitals. Workers in these clinical roles perform tasks like screening patients, helping families make post-discharge arrangements, and helping patients understand potentially difficult medical treatments and procedures.
  • Private practices:聽Becoming a social worker in private practices聽helps children and adults by providing therapy, crisis intervention and other mental health support.

  • Nursing homes: Those聽employed at nursing homes聽perform a variety of tasks related to the well-being of a facility鈥檚 residents. They review conditions to ensure they meet state and federal guidelines, as well as support and advocate for residents and their families.

Pros of becoming a social worker

Employment in social work can be rewarding and fulfilling personally and professionally. It can be hard and emotional, but it does carry several benefits.

Positions for social workers are聽, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). That鈥檚 roughly聽63,800 openings each year.

This is why it鈥檚 important to have realistic expectations and know whether you can handle some of the more difficult aspects of social work. Some of the most prominent drawbacks include:

Emotional stress

Social work practice involves helping people through hard times. Confronting these issues day after day, directly with the people suffering, can take its toll. For a family social worker or a substance abuse social worker, for example, it can be hard to distance oneself from these challenging situations.

Safety concerns

Some aspects of becoming a social worker聽. For instance, clients can be unpredictable; they might verbally or physically assault a social worker. In risky situations, a law enforcement escort can be requested, but dangerous conditions can still arise quickly and with little notice.

Demanding hours

Resistance from clients

Clients may be uncooperative, rude and even aggressive to social workers. Pride or embarrassment might cause resistance to any kind of help. This makes it vital for social workers to harbor understanding, patience and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to recognize a dangerous situation. Conflict de-escalation skills may be necessary to help avoid incidents.

What requirements do you need when becoming a social worker?

After you have determined whether social work is right for you, look into the licensure and education聽requirements of social work.聽A common prerequisite is a BSW, or聽Bachelor of Science in Social Work. Depending on the state聽and position, additional licenses and certifications may be required. More advanced social work may require a master鈥檚 degree in social work, or MSW.

Social work students pursuing a degree will learn skills necessary for their daily duties. These include learning how to behave ethically, how to assess individuals鈥 needs, and how to engage with families, organizations and communities. Students will get ample opportunity to engage with practical training in the field, which can help to build confidence and experience before stepping into this career.
