State licensure requirements

The University鈥檚 Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW) program meets the requirements for licensure or certification requirements in the states listed below. Review the social work licensure requirements listed under your state.

As a social work candidate in Alabama, you must complete the following requirements to apply for the Licensed Bachelor Social Worker (LBSW) after graduating from the 七色视频 Bachelor of Science in Social Work program.

Clearances:

During the application process, candidates听must听disclose criminal conviction history as part of their application. Candidates with a criminal conviction history may be denied licensure.

Exam:

Bachelor's candidates must pass the听听baccalaureate exam. The ASWB Bachelor鈥檚 Exam can be completed with authorization from the Alabama board. Authorization is given following completion of all other application requirements. If an applicant has completed the Bachelor鈥檚 exam in another jurisdiction, they should simply request that verification of a passing score be sent to this Board, either from ASWB, or from the state Board which originally authorized the exam.

Each applicant seeking to become licensed must meet and/or complete the requirements for the Licensed Bachelor Social Worker as defined by the State of Alabama.听Please review and complete the听听for the State of Alabama.

Additional Post-Graduate Supervision Requirements:

A minimum of 4 hours per month supervision is required for 24 months, to total 96 hours of supervision. This supervision must be completed with a 36-month period beginning with employment for Bachelor level licensees. Supervision must be provided by a LMSW or LICSW. After 24 or more months (96 hours) of supervision, a LBSW may engage in the practice of social work without further licensing supervision as long as the social worker remains in the same type of social work practice.

A contract must be negotiated between the supervisor and the supervisee and is subject to the approval of the Board.

If supervision is terminated by either party, the supervisor is responsible for completing the evaluation and termination forms within 30 days and forwarding the documents to the Board for review. The supervisor shall certify the total number of supervised hours at termination.

As a social work candidate in Arizona, you must complete the following requirements to apply for the Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker (LBSW) after graduating from the 七色视频 Bachelor of Science in Social Work program.

Clearances:

Candidates must submit a full set of fingerprints and proof of online payment for a criminal history background check through the听听unless candidates can provide听听that they hold a current, valid DPS fingerprint clearance card.

Exam:

Bachelor's candidates must pass the听baccalaureate exam. The ASWB Bachelor鈥檚 Exam can be completed with the authorization from the Arizona Board. Authorization is given following completion of all other application requirements. If an applicant has completed the Bachelor鈥檚 exam in another jurisdiction, they should request that verification of a passing score be sent to this Board from ASWB. Candidates must receive a passing score on the approved ASWB exam within 12 months after receiving written examination authorization from the Board. An applicant shall not take an approved licensure examination more than three times during the 12-month testing period.

Clearances:

All applicants for social work licensure must apply for a criminal background check and the results must be received by the Arkansas Social Work Licensing Board prior to being issued a provisional license, license through endorsement, or approval to take the exam. A current and valid application for licensure must be on file prior to criminal background checks being processed. Instructions will be sent for the background process once the application and fee have been received by the Board.

After an application is approved, the applicant will be mailed a letter of eligibility with a link to the website for the candidate handbook and instructions for registering for the exam. As a social work candidate in Delaware, you must complete the following requirements to apply for the Baccalaureate Social Worker (BSW) after graduating from the 七色视频 Bachelor of Science in Social Work program.

Clearances:

Candidates must submit a State of Delaware and Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal background check (CBC). For instructions to complete your fingerprinting for both the Federal and State criminal background checks, go to听. Candidates must also submit a completed and signed听. The request must be within 90 days of signature date in the consent form in order to be processed.

Exam:

Bachelor's candidates must pass the听baccalaureate exam. The ASWB Bachelor鈥檚 Exam can be completed with the authorization from the Delaware Board. Authorization is given following completion of all other application requirements. If an applicant has completed the Bachelor鈥檚 exam in another jurisdiction, they should request that verification of a passing score be sent to this Board from ASWB. Candidates must receive a passing score on the approved ASWB exam within two years after receiving written examination authorization from the Board. If a candidate fails the exam, the exam may be re-taken every 90 days until passed. An applicant who does not pass the exam within two years from the date of the submitted application, will need to re-apply.

A听听is required for all health care license, certification, and registration applications.   • One recent and Identical Passport Type Photo (2x2 size) of the Applicant鈥檚 Face. The photo must be original and cannot be a computer-generated copy, or paper copy.
  • One photocopy of a current government issued photo ID. This can be a driver鈥檚 license or passport.
  • Three character reference . The names and addresses of three responsible persons (2 must be professional social workers and the 3rd can be family member or friend) who have known you for at least one year and can attest to your character.   • Work Experience that lists all social work-related experience on form in chronological order. This form must be completed by all applicants and uploaded with application documents online.

Applicants must disclose any complaints, charges of unlicensed activity, or pending disciplinary actions for any profession, occupation, or license, both motor vehicle and those other than motor vehicle on their application along with a signed, detailed statement and related court/agency documentation. If the application indicates criminal conviction, they must also submit a current criminal history record check from the听听dated within six months. If the criminal conviction occurred in a state or states other than Hawaii, a current criminal history record check will be required from each state and Hawaii.

Clearances:

During the application process, candidates will complete the Personal History Information section that asks about previous convictions, health, previous denial of a professional license or permit, discharge other than honorably from the armed services or from a city, county, state, or federal position.

Post-Graduation Supervision Requirements:

Persons applying as a Licensed Social Worker who have a baccalaureate degree in social work shall complete 3 years of supervised professional experience subsequent to obtaining the baccalaureate degree. The experience shall be:

  • Obtained under the direct supervision of a Licensed Social Worker under the Clinical Social Work and Social Work Practice Act (formerly Social Workers Registration Act), diplomate in clinical social work, designated member of ACSW or other appropriate supervisor as approved by the Board.
  • Satisfactory as evaluated by the supervisor. The supervisor shall have met with the individual an average of at least 4 hours each month.

Licensed Social Worker (LSW):

  • NON-EXAMINATION 鈥 LSW ONLY. An LSW seeking licensure under Illinois Public Act 102-0326 is not required to complete an examination. This licensure method does not apply to LCSW licensure. Follow the听 steps. Applicants have 3 years from the date of application to complete the application process.
  • SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS - Licensure Application with fee, PHQ form (Personal History Questions), ED form (Certification of Education), VE-SW (Social Work Verification of Supervision Experience), Personal History Documents.

Clearances:

Candidates must complete a听听as part of the application process. An email to begin the background check process will only be sent to the candidate once the Indiana Professional License Agency has received a complete application packet.

Exams:

Bachelor's candidates must pass the听听baccalaureate exam. The ASWB Bachelor鈥檚 Exam can be completed with the authorization from the听听(scroll down to the Exams & Testing section and expand the Social Worker Examination section). Once approval from the agency is received, the agency will email you explaining the registration and scheduling process for the exam. An applicant who has听been听approved by the Board to take the examination must take the examination within one (1) calendar year from the date of the initial Board approval. If the applicant has not taken the examination within one (1) calendar year from the date of the initial Board approval, the approval will be invalid and the applicant must submit a new application and all required documentation must be resubmitted.听No extensions will be granted.

As a social work candidate in Maryland, you must complete the following requirements to apply for the Licensed Bachelor Social Worker (LBSW) after graduating from the 七色视频 Bachelor of Science in Social Work program.

Bachelor's candidates must pass the听听baccalaureate exam. The ASWB Bachelor鈥檚 Exam can be completed with the authorization from the Maryland board. See Licensure by Examination under the听听for Maryland Social Workers. Authorization is given following completion of all other application requirements and is valid for 2 years from the date of approval. If an applicant has completed the Bachelor鈥檚 exam in another jurisdiction, they should simply request that verification of a passing score be sent to this Board, either from ASWB, or from the state Board which originally authorized the exam.

As a social work candidate in Massachusetts, you must complete the following requirements to apply for the Licensed Social Worker (LSW) after graduating from the 七色视频 Bachelor of Science in Social Work program.

Clearances:

In accordance with听, in order to determine suitability for licensure, the Board has become certified by Department of Criminal Justice Information Services (DCJIS) for access to criminal offender record information for all candidates for initial licensure and license renewal as a social worker.听听must be notarized, signed with corresponding dates, and mailed to ASWB.

Exam:

Bachelor's candidates must pass the听baccalaureate exam. The ASWB Bachelor鈥檚 Exam can be completed with the authorization from the Massachusetts board. Authorization is given following completion of all other application requirements. If an applicant has completed the Bachelor鈥檚 exam in another jurisdiction, they should request that verification of a passing score be sent to this Board from ASWB. Scores older than two years will not be accepted.

Licensed Social Worker:

    • Two professional references
    • One field placement supervisory reference to document the placement supervision that was completed as part of the CSWE-accredited BSW program curriculum

At least one reference must be licensed at the LICSW or LCSW level (or equivalent social work license in another jurisdiction). All references must be qualified to evaluate the applicant鈥檚 social work experience. A current email address will need to be provided for each reference so that a secure link can be sent to the references listed on your application.

  • A 2鈥 x 2鈥 clear, color photo must be uploaded via the online application, or emailed as an attachment to听mass.sw.app@aswb.org.听

Each applicant seeking to become licensed must meet and/or complete the requirements for the Limited Licensed Bachelor Social Worker (L-LBSW) as defined by the State of Michigan. The L-LBSW will be issued for 1 year and may be renewed for not more than 6 times. Additional Training:

Human Trafficking:
Prior to licensing, individuals seeking licensure must complete training in identifying victims of human trafficking that meet Michigan鈥檚 standards. More information is available through听.

Implicit Bias:
Individuals seeking licensure must have completed at least two (2) hours of implicit bias training within the five (5) years immediately preceding issuance of the license. Implicit bias training must meet Michigan鈥檚 standards. For further information review the听.

Post-Graduation Supervision Requirement:

Limited Licensed Bachelor Social Workers must accumulate 4,000 hours of work experience supervised by a Licensed Master鈥檚 Social Worker, accrued over no less than 2 years prior to licensure. The qualifying experience must be accumulated in听no less听than 16 hours per week,听no more听than 40 hours per week and听no more听than 2,080 hours in a calendar year of supervised work experience. The supervision must include听at least four hours听of supervisory review of active work functions and records, at least two hours of fact-to-face individual supervision听per month听and any group supervision included individual review of a candidate鈥檚 active work functions and records.

Once complete, the hours and supervision must be verified by the supervisor(s) on the听听form.

Candidates must complete a听. The background check is a comprehensive, nationwide, fingerprint-based criminal background check (CBC). The purpose of a state and national background check is to ensure public safety in an increasingly mobile workforce. Additionally, a candidate for licensure must not have engaged in conduct that was or would be in violation of the social work standards of practice in MN.

Exam:

Bachelor's candidates must pass the听听baccalaureate exam. The ASWB Bachelor鈥檚 Exam can be completed with the authorization from the Minnesota Board of Social Work. Authorization is given once an application has been reviewed and approved. Students can apply for licensure six months before graduation to gain exam authorization while they complete their program.

As a social work candidate in Nevada, you must complete the following requirements to apply for the Licensed Social Worker (LSW) after graduating from the 七色视频 Bachelor of Science in Social Work program.

Clearances:

Candidates must download and complete a听 before beginning the application process. The linked waiver is specific to the Nevada Board of Social Work Examiners and provides all required information to the fingerprint official. Fingerprints will be submitted through the LiveScan process. Background checks older than six (6) months old will not be accepted. Candidates will need to scan and email the completed waiver document to the board at听slowery@besw.nv.gov.

Exam:

Bachelor's candidates must pass the听听baccalaureate exam. The ASWB Bachelor鈥檚 Exam can be completed with the authorization from the Nevada board during the last semester of the social work program. To be eligible, candidates must show proof of meeting the Boards age, citizenship, character, and education requirements. The exam must be passed within 9 months of authorization. If the first attempt results in a non-passing score, the exam can be retaken听every 90 days after the failed examination until the application expires.

All new applicants for licensure are required to submit to a statewide and nationwide criminal history check as well as consent to a child abuse information index check which includes authorization for the ND Department of Health and Human Services to release to the Board reports of decisions that services are required for child abuse or neglect filed. Once the NDBSWE receives the required documents for the criminal history record check and the child abuse and neglect background inquire, they will be submitted for processing. Bachelor's candidates must pass the听baccalaureate exam.听The Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council has partnered with ASWB to allow prospective licensees to apply for the exam directly with听. Candidates are eligible to register if they have graduated from their social work program or are in their last semester of the social work program. Please note, failure to pass an examination within three attempts will result in an automatic denial of an application. A candidate whose application is denied due to examination failure may reapply for licensure but will not be allowed or approved to sit for the exam again until the applicant has submitted a detailed study plan designed to address the known or suspected areas of deficiency. The study plan must be approved by the Board before authorization will be given to retake the examination.

As a social work candidate in West Virginia, you must complete the following requirements to apply for the Licensed Social Worker (LSW) after graduating from the 七色视频 Bachelor of Science in Social Work program.

Clearances:

During the application process, candidates听may be required todisclose criminal conviction history as part of their application. Candidates with a criminal conviction history may be denied licensure.

Exam:

Bachelor's candidates must pass the听baccalaureate exam. The ASWB Bachelor鈥檚 Exam can be completed with the authorization from the West Virginia board. Authorization is given following completion of all other application requirements. If an applicant has completed the Bachelor鈥檚 exam in another jurisdiction, they should request that verification of a passing score be sent to this Board from ASWB.

  • Three professional references. The three references do not necessarily need to be social workers; it could be a teacher, or a colleague but should know the applicant long enough to confirm the applicant merits the public trust. References are not accepted from a spouse or from relatives.

As a social work candidate in Wisconsin, you must complete the following requirements to apply for the Certified Social Worker (CSW) after graduating from the 七色视频 Bachelor of Science in Social Work program.

Clearances:

Candidates must complete the Convictions and Pending Charges听, and Malpractice suits or claims听, if applicable, as part of the application process.

Exam:听

Wisconsin requires two examinations for the CSW. The Wisconsin听听is an open book exam that requires a passing score of 85% to be taken after your application has been submitted. For more information, contact:听DSPSCredentialingCSC@wisconsin.gov.

Bachelor's candidates must also pass the听听baccalaureate exam. The ASWB Bachelor鈥檚 Exam can be completed with the authorization from the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. Authorization is given following completion of all other application requirements. See National Examination, Association of Social Worker Boards (ASWB) section on page i of the听听for Social Workers. If an applicant has completed the Bachelor鈥檚 exam in another jurisdiction, they should simply request that verification of a passing score be sent to this Board, either from ASWB, or from the state Board which originally authorized the exam.听

As a social work candidate in Wyoming, you must complete the following requirements to apply for the Certified Social Worker (CSW) after graduating from the 七色视频 Bachelor of Science in Social Work program.

Clearances:

Candidates must submit two sets of fingerprints for a criminal history background check through the听. The Board will issue the cards and instructions once requested by the candidate.

Exam:

Bachelor's candidates must pass the听baccalaureate exam. The ASWB Bachelor鈥檚 Exam can be completed with the authorization from the Wyoming board. Authorization is given following completion of all other application requirements. If an applicant has completed the Bachelor鈥檚 exam in another jurisdiction, they should request that verification of a passing score be sent to this Board from ASWB. Candidates must receive a passing score on the approved ASWB exam within 12 months after receiving written examination authorization from the Board. An applicant will only receive three attempts to pass the exam.
