Human resources (HR) professionals seeking to advance their careers often consider certification as a way to demonstrate expertise and credibility. Two of the most recognized credentialing bodies in the industry are the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), each offering distinct certification programs.
Both HRCI and SHRM HR certifications validate HR knowledge and skills, but they differ in their approach, eligibility requirements, and focus areas. Understanding the key differences between HRCI and SHRM certifications can help professionals determine which credential aligns best with their career goals and organizational needs.

SHRM-SCP is for general HR/HR-related duties or those pursuing a career in human resource management.听This certification requires applicants to have three years of strategic-level experience in human resources.
Many consider 听an advanced credential听for individuals (including SHRM-CPs) with at least three years of experience in strategic-level HR or HR-related duties. Candidates do not need an HR title or a degree to apply.
The SHRM-SCP exam assesses the competency of professionals developing HR policies, overseeing the execution of integrated HR operations, directing HR enterprises and leading the alignment of HR strategies to organizational goals. Applicants must demonstrate a听minimum of 1,000 hours听per calendar year devoted to strategic-level HR or HR-related work.听
When looking at HR certifications from HRCI and SHRM, keep some things in mind. First,听consider your budget听and听how much time听you can devote to studying for the exam. If you鈥檙e working full time and have a family, this may impact which HR certification is best for you.
A survey showed that study time for SHRM certification was reported to be between 41 and 120 hours on average for first-time test-takers, according to the听. Second, think about the听career path听you want to take. For example, pursuing a human resource management (HRM) certificate program might make sense if you want to be an HR manager. For SHRM and HRCI, lower-level certifications do not require HR experience.
