White Paper

Skills: Putting Learners to Work and Helping Workers Learn

Abstract

Skills are the language used between employers and employees to understand their relationship, accomplish shared goals, and deliver value. A pivot to skills-based hiring, then, is an opportunity for this language to be honed and better understood—a chance for learners and businesses alike to connect and innovate. Just as employers need more from their employees, so too do learners need more opportunities to gain the skills they need and present those skills to employers. This moment calls not just for new skills, but for an improved understanding of those skills, as well as the tools needed to communicate them. This will be especially true for the working adults ɫƵ was founded to serve, as these students often do not have the luxury of waiting for their investments in higher education to show a return. This white paper tackles an important question: What happens as the “degree-and-done” mentality fades, and keeping up with skills requires new ways of thinking?

Here we describe how ɫƵ is building on our skills-focused framework to highlight what skills are needed and who has them, as well as a way to share this information with all necessary stakeholders while providing workers with control and employers with trust. Perhaps most importantly, solutions like our Career Navigator offer immediate clarity—as well as the potential to innovate and continuously reinvent the skills marketplace.
